A Chrome Extension That Finds Duplicate Google Photos

Duplicates, Similar Shots, and a Choice of What to Keep

GPDRM logo

GPDRM is a Chrome extension for a Google Photos library that has grown past the point of a manual cleanup. It scans for duplicate and similar photos and videos.

The user can let the extension suggest what to keep, or choose by size, resolution, the date the photo was taken, the date it was uploaded, or the file name.

The scan stays in the browser. Deletes go through Google Photos, and a photo removed by mistake can be brought back from the Google Photos trash.

What the Extension Enables

  • Find duplicate and similar photos and videos
  • See size and resolution before a delete
  • Keep or remove by size, date, or name
  • Sync the cleanup through Google Photos
  • Recover a photo from the trash

Key Features

Duplicate and lookalike scan

A suggestion of what to keep

Manual choice by size or date

File size and resolution

Trash recovery

Processing in the browser

The Challenges

Google Photos will hold every copy. Similar shots from the same moment, and true duplicates, sit in the library until someone opens them one by one.

Duplicates are hard to spot in a large library

Similar photos are not exact copies

Size and resolution are not obvious

A wrong delete should not be permanent

The extension had to compare photos in the browser, show which file is larger or newer, and let Google Photos carry the delete and the restore.

Platform Capabilities

The scan

  • Similar, not only identical, shots
  • A pass across the library
  • The work stays in the browser

The choice

  • A suggested keep
  • Or a manual keep
  • Sort by size or resolution
  • Sort by shoot date, upload date, or name

The file

  • The real size of the photo or video
  • The resolution
  • Space the copies are using
  • A clear pair before anything is removed

After delete

  • The change syncs in Google Photos
  • Other devices follow that library
  • Trash still holds the file
  • A mistake can be undone from the trash

Business Impact

A library can be reviewed as pairs instead of a scroll of thousands of thumbnails.

The user sees size and resolution before a file goes, and Google Photos remains the place the delete actually happens.

Duplicates and similar shots are grouped

The keep decision can be suggested or manual

A removed photo can come back from the trash

Scrolling the Library vs GPDRM

One Photo at a Time

  • Duplicates hide in the scroll

  • Size is a guess
  • A delete feels final

GPDRM

  • Pairs of duplicates and lookalikes
  • Size, resolution, and date on the pair
  • A suggested file to keep
  • Restore from Google Photos trash
