One Codebase for Android and iOS: When It Is Enough

Introduction: Most business apps show an account, a list, a form, and a notification. One codebase, with Flutter or React Native, can ship that product on Android and iOS. A fully separate native app is a later choice, when the phone itself is the product.

1. Use one codebase for a shared product

If both stores should offer the same screens and the same account, one team and one release train is easier to keep honest. Design the screens for a phone first, then check a tablet only if people will use one.

2. Go native when the device is the feature

  • Heavy camera, Bluetooth, or background location that a shared toolkit only half supports.
  • A watch or a car screen that the shared toolkit does not cover.
  • An existing native app that already has years of store history.

3. Plan the stores as part of the build

Screenshots, a privacy label, and a test account are part of the release. A finished build still waits if the store listing is an afterthought.

One codebase is enough when both apps are the same product. Split them when the hardware is the product.

4. Conclusion

EliteSigma builds the shared app when the product is the same on both stores, and says so when a native path is the clearer one.
