WordPress Updates and Backups: A Simple Routine

Introduction: A WordPress site breaks more often from an untested plugin update than from a lack of features. A simple routine is a backup you have restored once, a staging copy, and a day of the month when updates happen.

1. Know what is installed

List the theme, the plugins, and who added each one. A plugin with no owner is a plugin to remove. Fewer plugins means fewer updates that can take the site down.

2. Update on staging first

  • Copy the live site to staging.
  • Apply WordPress, theme, and plugin updates there.
  • Click the checkout, the form, and the login before you repeat the updates on the live site.

3. Restore the backup on purpose

A backup that has never been restored is a hope. Once a quarter, restore it to staging and confirm the home page and the login. Then you know the file is real.

The update is safe when you have already seen the site come back from the backup.

4. Conclusion

EliteSigma sets that routine for WordPress sites that need to stay online through ordinary updates.
